My brother in law has a house near Dieppe and we get to go over there for a long weekend most years. There are lots of gardens there worth visiting – Jardin D’agapanthes and Bois des moutiers which has a Lutyens house and Gertrude Jekyll planting sitting on top of a chalk cliff on the wrong side of the Channel.
However this year we went to visit the Potager Garden at Miromesnil. It has a a classic structure – 4 squares of vegetables surrounded by borders of mixed flowers. It was started in 1948 by the Comtesse de Vogue. Her son added fruit trees to the garden and decided to cut the grass on the south side of the park in a chequered design similar to that used in the 18th century.
The garden includes some local varieties – these include ‘Saint Valery carrots, Elbeuf Leeks, lamb’s lettuce from Bent and Saint Saens cabbage. These can way up to 20 Kilos and were famous in the 19th century. You can see them in the first photo.
A bit different from the average allotment wouldn’t you say. More photos are posted at our facebook page here
